Royalty Types and Exemptions

Royalty fees are required for items bearing any Charlotte logos, trademarks or trade names that are resold – regardless of whether that sale is for profit.

“Resale“ includes monetary exchange, donations for exchange, membership to a group or access to an event.

Royalties are Required When…

The item is for resale for any value, money, goods or other exchange.
The item carries a commercial message, sponsorship or endorsement.
The item is used as a promotional marketing device for an event.

Royalties May be Exempt When…

University departments and registered student organizations procure merchandise that meets these criteria:

The item is not resold for any value, money, goods or other exchange.
The item is restricted to members of a department or club as a “uniform.”
The item is part of an all-campus event that does not carry endorsements.
